Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox has been approved for use in the U.S. since 2002 as a cosmetic treatment. The purified neurotoxin temporarily paralyzes the tiny facial muscles that work when you make facial expressions. As these small muscles stop moving, your skin relaxes, and fine lines and wrinkles soften. You look naturally more relaxed and less lined.
Where is Botox effective?
Botox is effective in several areas that commonly show your age. These include:
- Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
- Horizontal lines on the forehead
- Lines between the eyebrows (the 11s)
Anyone over the age of 18 is a candidate. Some people begin Botox when they’re young to discourage wrinkles from forming in the first place. You can also have Botox to fight already existing creases.
How does Botox address hyperhidrosis?
If you suffer from excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, the team at Seacoast Dermatology, may use Botox as part of your treatment. Botox is useful when prescription antiperspirants fail to help you find relief from sweating too much at the armpits.
What should I expect during Botox treatments?
Botox treatments are quick, lasting just about 20 minutes. The doctors identify the best places on your face for injections, which means they look for the locations of the muscles responsible for your major lines. No downtime is necessary following Botox injections – you can go right back to all your normal activities after treatment.
You do feel a prick as the needle punctures the skin, but most people find the treatments quite tolerable. If you’re concerned about sensation, talk to the doctors about using ice or a topical cream to numb the area.
When do the effects of Botox take effect and how long do they last?
Botox effects are noticeable within 24-48 hours. Wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox last three to four months, after which you schedule appointments to repeat your injections and maintain a youthful look.
Botox can halt excessive sweating for 4-14 months. Each person’s metabolism reacts differently to Botox so the effectiveness of the treatment varies; retreatments may be necessary.
